Anonymous German of the 16th century attributable to the artistic circle and the workshop of Cranach (Hans Wechtlin?) "Von dem heiligen Ertzengel Sant Michael" (San Michele Arcangelo) Original woodcut inserted in a text in German with Gothic characters, fragment of a sheet from an edition of Jacobus de Voragine's work "Der heiligen Leben neüw getruckt." printed and published by Johann Knobloch the elder in Strasbourg in 1517. Missing copy of a small portion of the right part of the sheet, with the prdita of some letters, printed on thin laid paper typically sixteenth-century, with various traces of dirt and touches on the edges and a strong browning on the right side but overall, given the remarkable rarity, in fairly good condition. We suggest the indication of Hans Wechtlin, reported by Reske in the cited bibliography, based on the fact that his birthplace is indicated in Strasbourg where surely since 1519 the artist has been part of the Guild of San Luca, that of the Painters and is the same certain place of Knobloch's editorial production, also the relations between Wechtlin and Cranach, whose influence is appreciated during his stay in Wittemberg, are known. Bibliography: Reske "Die Buchdrucker des 16 und 17 Jahrhunderts im deutschen Sprachgebiet" Wiesbaden 2007 pag. 875. Measurements in mm: 262 x 160ca (the sheet)
